Mongonis, Paxos, Greece: activities, attractions, and travel tips
The Greek island of Paxos promises an unforgettable time filled with relaxing moments, breathtaking views, and authentic Greek charm. One of the hidden gems of Paxos is Mongonis, sometimes spelled as Mongonissi.
Mongonis is an interesting case. It’s really a separate island from Paxos, but the channel that separates the two is so shallow that you can easily wade across. For easy access by car, it is connected to the main island by a narrow bridge. The area is characterized by its lush greenery, crystal-clear waters, and scenic landscapes. The sheltered bay of Mongonis provides calm waters, making it an excellent spot for swimming and water activities. The natural beauty of the area is complemented by the surrounding olive groves and the gentle rolling hills that create a picturesque backdrop.
Mongonis Beach is the main attraction of the peninsula, with its 200-meter long sandy shore and shallow waters that are perfect for families with children. The beach is well-equipped with sunbeds and umbrellas, ensuring a comfortable day by the sea.
Watersports
The calm waters are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and paddleboarding. The sheltered bay is also perfect for yachties, who can dock at the local marina. Boatless captains can rent a boat at Paxos Marine Boat Rentals and set off to discover the stunning coastline of Paxos and Antipaxos. The area is also known for its excellent diving spots, where you can explore underwater caves and vibrant marine life.
Hiking
For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the area offers several hiking trails that showcase the island’s natural beauty. One popular route is the trail leading from Mongonissi to the nearby village of Ozias on the main island. This (2.2 km one way) walk takes you through olive groves and offers stunning views of the Ionian Sea.
Another scenic hike is the coastal path towards Paxos’ capital of Gaios (4.5 km one way), which provides breathtaking vistas of the coastline and opportunities to spot local wildlife.
These trails are well-marked and vary in difficulty, catering to both casual walkers and more experienced hikers. Remember to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and, of course, a camera to capture the stunning landscapes along the way!
Eating and drinking
After a day of play, you can relax at the beach side taverna, which is known for its delicious seafood dishes and traditional Greek cuisine. Enjoy a meal in the shade of the trees with a view of the bay, before you head back to your accommodation.
Mongonis is easily accessible from the main villages of Paxos, such as Gaios and Loggos. You can reach Mongonis by rental car or scooter, and there is ample parking available near the beach. Alternatively, you can take a taxi or even arrange for a boat transfer.
The best time to visit Mongonis is during the late spring and early summer months, from May to June, and in the early autumn, from September to October. During these periods, the weather is warm and pleasant, and the area is less crowded than in the peak summer months of July and August.
